Earning One Dollar Too Much Could Cost an Early Retiree About $6,900 Next Year
$63,840. If you are under 65 and buy your own health insurance, that number may shape your 2027 budget more than your mortgage. It is the income line for one person. Land a dollar under it and you get help with premiums. Land a dollar over and the help can vanish.
Here is what caught my eye. Open enrollment for 2027 marketplace plans starts November 1. The extra subsidies that softened this line expired at the end of 2025, and Congress has not brought them back.

Why It Matters for Your Money
Say you are 62, single, and the benchmark silver plan in your county costs `$1,100` a month. That is `$13,200` a year.
With income of `$63,000`, you pay roughly `10%` of it toward that plan, about `$6,300`. The subsidy covers the other `$6,900`.
Now say a part-time job or one extra IRA withdrawal pushes you to `$64,000`. You are over the line, so you pay the full `$13,200`. One thousand dollars more income costs you `$6,900` in help.
The subsidy is paid in advance, based on your own estimate. If your real income lands over the line, you pay it back at tax time. Starting with 2026, the old caps on that repayment are gone.
Sound familiar? The cliff rarely surprises people in November. It surprises them in April.
Health insurance is a bill you pay every month. Our partner below writes about the other side: owning a piece of something people buy every morning.

Green Coffee Company
In 1992 a small coffee company out of Seattle sold shares to the public at about 27 cents, split-adjusted.
Two men read the same prospectus that year.
One put money in. The other decided coffee was a fad and kept his cash where it felt safe.
You know how that ended. The stock trades above $90 today.
Nobody is going to tell you the next one is sitting in front of you. No one can know that.
But the shape of the decision does not change. One man looked at what he had and put it to work. The other looked at it and saw only what he might lose.
So here is one real thing happening now, and you can weigh it yourself.
Green Coffee Company is the largest producer of Colombian coffee. 45 farms. More than 10 million trees. It holds the exclusive third-party rights to sell Juan Valdez coffee across the U.S. and Canada, the brand Colombia has stood behind since 1959.
Revenue went from $1 million in 2021 to $26 million in 2025. This year’s harvest is projected at 5.1 million pounds, up from 2.3 million. The coffee is on more than 3,000 shelves now, in Target, in Walgreens, across 21 states.
A farmer plants a coffee tree and waits years for a real harvest. That is the whole business. It is also the whole point.
Shares are $1.15. The minimum is $1,000.50. More than 2,000 investors have already put in over $120 million. It is private, it is illiquid, and you could lose what you put in. Read the circular and decide for yourself.

The Wealth Angle
Here is where it gets interesting. Few households near this line can change what they earn. Many can change which account they draw from.
Money from a Roth IRA generally does not count toward this income. Neither does cash from a savings account you already paid tax on. Withdrawals from a traditional IRA do count, dollar for dollar.
Think about that for a second. Two retirees can spend the same `$64,000` next year. One draws it all from a traditional IRA and loses the subsidy. The other mixes in savings and Roth money and keeps it.
I think anyone between 55 and 65 on marketplace coverage should map out 2027 income before November, not after. The line is fixed. The path to it is not.
Rising bills run through this whole issue. Our partner below argues one ticker tends to move when household costs climb.

☕ Key Insight:
For 2027 marketplace coverage, premium help stops at `$63,840` for one person. One dollar over can cost thousands. Plan which accounts you draw from before open enrollment on November 1.
Coffee Break Move
Before your second cup, write down every source of income you expect in 2027. Include all Social Security, pensions, IRA withdrawals, and any stock sales.
If you are comfortable: see whether the total sits within a few thousand dollars of the line. In that case, plan to fill the gap from savings or a Roth account.
If money is tight: check whether your income falls under `250%` of the poverty line. Silver plans there come with extra help on deductibles and copays.
Then mark November 1 on the calendar. That is when the 2027 prices become real.
