The Morning Ritual
Idle Money in Checking Is Quietly Paying Someone. It Is Not You.
Saturday is when a lot of us open the banking app with a second cup and actually read it. Scroll past the grocery charges and the gas station. Near the bottom there is a line most of us skip. Interest earned. On `$20,000` sitting in a typical interest checking account, that line says about `$1.17` this month.
The balance looks the same as last month. It even looks safe. Here is what caught my eye this week. The Fed raised rates in September. The bank’s rate on your checking barely noticed. And the gap between those two numbers is going somewhere.
A balance that holds steady while its buying power slips is the whole story this morning. Our partner below makes the same point about retirement money.

A real wealth transfer does not ever show up on your monthly statement. The balance can look perfectly healthy while the retirement it actually funds keeps getting quietly smaller in real terms. That is the whole trick of it, and it is exactly why so many savers never really notice it until the very end. The free Wealth Protection Guide explains how Americans are protecting purchasing power rather than simply protecting balances.

In One Sip
► The average interest checking account pays `0.07%`. The average savings account pays `0.37%`. Source: FDIC, September 21.
► The Fed raised its benchmark rate to a range of `3.75%` to `4.00%` in September. Source: Federal Reserve via Forbes Advisor.
► A short-term Treasury yields about `3.63%`. That is roughly what a bank earns parking cash with the government. Source: FDIC rate table.
► Prices rose `3.4%` over the year to August on the PCE index, the Fed’s main inflation gauge. Source: Commerce Department.
► The buried part: leading online savings accounts pay around `4%`. Same insurance. Same dollars. About `57` times the checking rate.
Why It Matters for Your Money
Take that `$20,000` in checking. At `0.07%`, it earns about `$14` a year.
Prices rose `3.4%`. To buy the same groceries next year, that money needed to grow `$680`. It grew `$14`. That is -`$666` of buying power, gone without a single withdrawal.
Put the same money in a savings account paying `4%`. It earns about `$800`.
Now the math flips. After `3.4%` inflation, you come out +`$120` ahead instead of behind.
Same balance. Same FDIC insurance. A swing of about `$786` a year, decided by which box the money sits in.
Sound familiar? Most of us never chose the checking account on purpose. It is just where the paycheck lands.

On December 14, President Trump will gather the leaders of the world’s largest economies at his private Miami resort.
And I believe what happens there could change the U.S. dollar forever, potentially triggering a historic repricing across American markets.
The pieces are already falling into place:
A flurry of executive orders… billion-dollar government stakes in obscure mining companies… a landmark pact with 13 nations… and a special agreement signed by six billionaire tech moguls.
At Trump’s December summit, those pieces could finally be assembled in public for the first time, and a new kind of dollar presented to the world as a done deal.
That’s why I’ve produced this critical new documentary revealing:
Why I believe Trump is desperately trying to reset America’s money…
Why this has nothing to do with Bitcoin or gold, but is tied to the most valuable resource of the 21st century…
And three moves I believe you can make today to prepare, including the name and ticker of the investment I believe could benefit as this shift unfolds.
The last time America reset its money, it reportedly created, on average, more than 1,000 new millionaires every day for five decades.
But that was only one side of the story.
Millions of workers and savers were quietly left behind as their wages stalled, their savings were hollowed out and the American Dream slipped beyond their reach.
Now, I believe that same dividing line could be drawn again.

Here’s how I think you can prepare

The Wealth Angle
Here is where it gets interesting. Your bank can take that same `$20,000` and park it in short-term Treasuries at about `3.63%`.
That is roughly `$726` a year. It pays you `$14`. The difference, about `$712`, stays with the bank.
I don’t blame the bank. That is its business. I blame the default setting, the one that lets a balance sit for years because it looks fine.
Think about that for a second. When the Fed raises rates, a credit card rate tied to prime usually moves within a billing cycle or two. Big-bank deposit rates may not move at all.
The hike works fast on what you owe. It barely touches what you keep. Unless you move the money yourself.
☕ Key Insight:
Checking pays `0.07%`. Prices rose `3.4%`. Every dollar you leave there past next month’s bills is a dollar you are lending to your bank for free.
Coffee Break Move
Before your second cup, open the banking app. Find the interest rate on checking, not just the balance.
If you are comfortable: keep about one month of bills in checking. Move the rest to an FDIC-insured savings account paying near `4%`. Check the standard APY, not a three-month teaser.
If you are stretched: start with `$1,000`. At `4%`, that is about `$40` a year instead of `70` cents. Set one automatic transfer on payday so the move happens without you.
The balance will look exactly the same on Monday. That was always the problem.
