A Fund Company Published Your December Tax Bill in October. Almost Nobody Opened It.
On October 7 a fund company posted a short table of numbers on its own website. It lists, fund by fund, how much of each shareholder’s money comes back in December as a taxable event.
The largest line on it is 25.58% of net asset value. That is not a loss, and it is not a gain anyone chose to take. It is a distribution, and outside a retirement account the tax on it belongs to whoever held the fund.
In One Sip
► Hartford Funds published its December estimates on October 7, measured as of August 31
► The largest, the Hartford Small Cap Growth Fund, is estimated at 25.58% of net asset value
► The next largest on the same sheet is 20.14%, and the smallest equity estimate is 0.48%
► The record date for their equity funds is December 10 and the money is payable December 14
► None of it is owed inside an IRA or a 401(k). The bill only lands in a taxable account
A distribution is at least a cost you can look up. The partner below writes about one that never appears on a statement.

In August 2026 the national debt passed $40 trillion.1 It was not voted on. There was no ceremony. Most Americans found out from a headline, if they found out at all.
Somebody has to absorb it
A debt that size does not simply sit there. It gets serviced, refinanced, and eventually dealt with, and there are only three ways to deal with it: raise taxes, cut spending, or reduce the real value of what is owed by letting the currency weaken. The first two require Congress to do something unpopular on the record. The third requires nobody to do anything at all.
That is why the figure matters to a retirement account rather than just to a budget committee. Every dollar in your IRA is a claim denominated in the same currency the debt is denominated in. If the obligation is managed down in real terms, that happens through your savings, not around them.
The evidence is already behind us. It takes roughly $1.95 today to buy what a dollar bought in 2000.2 Nothing was confiscated. The unit was simply worth less each year, and savers holding it carried the cost quietly.
Gold is the one asset in this conversation with no issuer. No treasury can print it, no company can dilute it, no counterparty can default on it. Central banks themselves have been buying more than a thousand tons a year.3 They are not doing it for the yield.
You are allowed to hold physical gold inside an IRA. Most savers have never been told that, because the firms holding their money do not sell it. The free 2026 Gold IRA Guide walks through exactly how a rollover from an IRA, 401(k) or TSP works, which metals the IRS allows, how insured depository storage works, and the mistakes that cost retirees the most. It is free and it takes about thirty seconds to request.

Why It Matters for Your Money
A fund that sells a holding at a profit cannot keep the gain. Once a year it has to pass what it realised to the people who own it, in cash or in extra shares.
The share price falls by the same amount on the day. Your account is worth what it was the minute before, which is exactly why this catches people.
Nothing arrived and nothing was earned, and a tax form arrives anyway. The gain was realised inside the fund, by the manager trimming and by other shareholders leaving. Their exit forces sales to pay them out.
Reinvesting does not help. The agency treats a reinvested distribution as cash you received and spent, so the tax is the same.
The spread inside that one fund family runs from 0.48% to 25.58%. Which fund you own matters far more here than what the market did this year.
And if you were about to buy one of them, the date matters. Buy the week before a record date and you buy a share of a gain you were not there for. Then you pay tax on it.
Every line on that table turns into a form in February. The message below is from a partner, on paperwork of a different kind.

The IRS loves when you pass down cash to your kids or grandkids.
Bank accounts are reported. Brokerage statements are tracked. Real estate transfers require government paperwork.
Easy to track. Easy to tax.
But there is one asset used for inheritance that works differently.
Certain gold coins are classified as non-reportable transactions under IRS rules.
An individual can sell any quantity to a dealer without triggering an automatic IRS filing.
No tax forms. No CPAs. Nobody is notified.
These assets sit entirely outside the banking system. Private, legal, and completely under your control.
And here is what most people do not realize: you can use your existing 401(k), IRA, or TSP to buy them, tax-deferred and penalty-free.
The Quiet Wealth Playbook reveals exactly which coins qualify and how to get started.

The Coffee Break Move
Look up one page this week. Search your fund company’s name and the words capital gains distribution estimates. Every large house posts one in October and updates it through November.
Then check which account the fund sits in. If it is an IRA or a 401(k), close the page and forget it. If it is a plain brokerage account, note the number and the record date.
Anyone planning to add to that fund before Christmas should wait until the day after the record date. Same fund, same price, one fewer tax bill.
Today’s letter is about a rule that works the same way every year. The message below is from a partner, on rules that may not.

☕ Key Insight:
The distribution does not make you richer by a cent. It only decides which year you pay for gains realised on your behalf.
One Last Sip
None of this is a reason to sell. Selling to dodge a distribution usually triggers a larger gain than the distribution would have.
It is a reason to know the number before your accountant does. A figure you learn in November is a planning decision. The same figure in February is a surprise.
The fund companies are not hiding it. They publish it early, in plain tables, and almost nobody reads them.
