Generator, Battery, or a Cooler: The 2026 Outage Math Just Changed
If the lights went out tonight, you probably know exactly where the flashlight is. Fewer of us know how long the freezer can hold. Or what a backup system costs this year. Most people decide during the outage, standing in a dark kitchen with the fridge door shut.
Here is what caught my eye. Americans sat in the dark for twice as many hours in 2024 as the decade before. And the federal tax break that used to cover part of a home battery quietly disappeared on January 1.
A power grid is something most of us trust without thinking. So is the dollar. Our partner below argues the second one is about to change.

In December President Trump will take the stage and shock the world.
Standing before the leaders of the most powerful nations on earth, at his own resort in Miami, I believe he’s set to unveil something that will impact every dollar you have saved and invested.
The original agenda for the G20 Summit was development finance and climate change.
That’s been scrapped.
Instead, my research indicates Trump could unveil a radical monetary reset that no one has prepared you for.
And the deeper I investigate, the more convinced I become that what happens in that room could draw a brutal dividing line, between those who understand what’s happening to their money, and those who do not.
Which means between now and December, there is a window. A chance to get ahead of what could be the most consequential change to our money in half a century.
It wasn’t voted on. It wasn’t debated in the Senate. And most Americans have no idea it’s even taking place but…
Not with crypto. Not with a digital currency. Something far bigger than that, and it’s already been signed and sealed in the back rooms of D.C., ready to be issued by the U.S. Treasury.
Bypassing every legal and political channel under the guise of “national security,” Trump has enacted this total money reset using a landmark executive order (14241).
Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, whether you support this new money or not, it doesn’t matter.
Soon, every U.S. citizen will be forced to use Trump’s New Dollar to fill their gas tank, buy groceries, and pay medical bills.
Which is why I’ve produced a critical new documentary laying out exactly what Trump’s New Dollar means for your savings, your investments, and your family’s financial future.
Detailing three important steps you can take today to prepare, including the name of a core band of assets connected to Trump’s initiative that could surge as a result.
As you’ll see in my briefing, the last time America reset its money like this, under Richard Nixon’s presidency in the 1970s, it created one of the greatest wealth divides in the history of our nation.
On one side, it minted an average of 1,300 new millionaires a day for over half a century. And on the other… the folks left behind, drowning in debt, with no idea how to use America’s new money to create wealth.
As Trump rolls out his new dollar, the question is:
Which side will you be on?

In One Sip
► U.S. electricity customers averaged `11` hours without power in 2024, nearly double the prior decade’s yearly average. Source: EIA.
► Big storms drove about `80%` of those hours. In a normal year without major events, outages run about `2` hours. Source: EIA.
► South Carolina customers averaged nearly `53` hours without power in 2024, the most of any state. Source: EIA.
► A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about `4` hours. A full freezer holds about `48` hours, a half-full one about `24`. Source: USDA.
► The buried part: the `30%` federal credit for home batteries and solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Source: IRS.
Why It Matters for Your Money
Say a home battery quote comes in at `$12,000`. Last year, the federal credit would have handed back `$3,600`.
This year it hands back `$0`. The same box costs `$3,600` more on your tax return.
Now price what an outage actually costs most households. A fridge and freezer full of groceries might run `$300` to `$500`. A night in a hotel adds a little more.
In a normal two-hour year, that risk is close to nothing. In a bad storm year, it is real but still a few hundred dollars.
Sound familiar? For most homes, the expensive part of a blackout is the food and the stress. The full-house system is insurance against the rare long one.
Every outage hour comes down to how much power the grid can actually deliver. Our partner below points to where new power is being built.

Dear Reader,
The people of Homer City, Pennsylvania watched the biggest power plant in state history come down.
The tallest chimney in America folded in seconds. Some of them cheered.
Eleven days later developers announced a 10 billion dollar campus on that exact ground.
Eleven days.
EQT has already signed on to pipe gas to it.
Nobody in that crowd knew what they were really standing on.

The Wealth Angle
Here is where it gets interesting. The right answer depends far more on your street than on the national average.
If your area lost power for two days in a recent hurricane or ice storm, the math tilts toward a real backup. Medical equipment that needs power tilts it hard.
Lose power twice a year for an hour? Then a `$12,000` system is a pricey way to save frozen shrimp.
Think about that for a second. The same storm stats that sell backup systems also show most hours come from a few big events in a few states.
I would match the spend to the risk. A full-house setup for storm country. A small portable unit for the fridge almost everywhere else. And a written plan for everyone.
☕ Key Insight:
Americans averaged `11` hours without power in 2024, but about `2` in a normal year. With the `30%` battery credit gone, size your backup to your own street, not the headline.
Coffee Break Move
Before your second cup, look up how long your power was out in the last big storm. Your utility or a neighbor will remember.
If outages run a day or more where you live: get two quotes. One for a standby generator, one for a battery. Compare them without the old `30%` credit.
If outages are short and rare: spend almost nothing. Keep the freezer full, put a thermometer in the fridge, and freeze a few jugs of water.
Either way, tape the USDA rule inside a cabinet: four hours for the fridge, two days for a full freezer. That note costs less than any backup you can buy.
