Congress Raised the Estate Tax Limit to $15 Million. Your State Did Not.
|
On January 1 the federal estate tax exemption rose to $15 million a person, up from $13.99 million. No expiry date is attached to it. For a married couple that is $30 million before Washington takes a cent. The number was written to end the worry, and for federal purposes it does exactly that.
Twelve states and the District of Columbia never agreed to any of it. Oregon starts taxing an estate at $1 million. Massachusetts starts at $2 million. A paid-off house, a retirement account and one life insurance policy clear those lines without anyone ever feeling wealthy.

In One Sip
► Federal exemption for 2026 is $15 million per person, indexed to inflation, with no sunset date
► Twelve states and DC levy an estate tax, the lowest thresholds being Oregon at $1 million and Rhode Island at $1.84 million
► Washington and Hawaii top out at 20%, the steepest state estate tax rates in the country
► Five states levy an inheritance tax, paid by whoever receives the money: Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania
► Pennsylvania sets no exemption at all, and Maryland is the only state that charges both taxes

Why It Matters for Your Money
Two different taxes get the same name in conversation. An estate tax is billed to the estate before anything is handed out. An inheritance tax is billed to each person who receives something, and the rate depends on who they are to you.
That second distinction is the one that catches people. A surviving spouse is exempt in all five states. Children and grandchildren sit in the lowest class and usually owe little. A sibling, a niece, a stepchild or a friend sits higher up. Each can owe 15% or 16% on money a son would have received free.
Residency decides which rules apply, not where the money sits. Retire to a state with an estate tax and the brokerage account held elsewhere comes with you. Real estate is the exception, since a second home is generally taxed where it stands.
Then there is the policy almost everyone forgets. A life insurance death benefit counts inside the taxable estate if you owned the policy. A $500,000 policy on top of a $700,000 house puts an Oregon estate over the line by itself.

☕ Key Insight: The federal number is the one that gets reported and the state number is the one that gets paid. Live in one of those thirteen jurisdictions and your real threshold is the state’s, which can sit fifteen times lower.

The Coffee Break Move
Add it up once this week, on paper. House at market value, retirement accounts, brokerage, savings, life insurance face amount, vehicles, and anything you own outright in another state. That total is the figure your state looks at, not your bank balance.
Then look up your own state’s threshold. If you are anywhere near it, find out which class your intended heirs fall into. Being close is the point at which to talk to an estate attorney licensed in your state rather than a general one. The fix is state specific, and it has to be done while you are still here to do it.
If your state is not on the list, the federal number is your number, and you are almost certainly a very long way underneath it.

The Fed Is Praying Trump Doesn’t Sign This. He Might Anyway.
For 50 years, Washington insiders have kept a secret that quietly stole the wealth of every working American.
They inflated the dollar into oblivion.
They printed trillions out of thin air.
They told you the stock market was your retirement plan, while they loaded up on hard assets.
Trump has been saying this for years. He’s the only one with the backbone to do something about it.
And right now, there is growing talk inside Washington circles that he’s preparing an executive order that the globalists, the central bankers, and the entire financial establishment have been dreading for decades.
Here’s what they’ve been hiding in plain sight:
America owns more gold than almost any nation on earth.
Washington has been valuing it at 1973 prices for over 50 years, $42.22 an ounce, while gold trades above $3,100 today.
One executive order correcting that valuation would trigger the largest wealth transfer in modern American history.
$7,000 gold? $10,000? $20,000? |
The last time a president reset America’s relationship with gold, one asset gained 2,300% in under a decade.
CNN won’t cover this. The Fed is praying you never connect the dots.
But Trump’s supporters have always been one step ahead of the establishment.
