Your Bank Pays You a Dime a Year. It Is Counting On You Not Noticing.

My buddy Ray came by Saturday with his laptop and the last of my coffee. He wanted help moving money into a CD. First I asked what his savings pays right now. He did not know. So we looked. `0.01%`. On the `$31,000` sitting there, the bank had paid him `$3.10` for the whole year.

Ray is not careless. He runs a small business. He reads. He just never checked the one number the bank hopes you never check. I told him the account down the street pays around `4%`. Same insurance. Same access. He set his mug down slow and asked the question that should bother all of us. How long has this been costing me?

There's a massive economic event you need to understand — right now.

By the time it makes the evening news, the damage will already be done.

The government won't sound the alarm. Your financial advisor won't either.

What I'm watching is a coordinated dismantling of the system that gave Americans 50 years of financial protection — moving faster than almost anyone expected.

No press conference announced it. No emergency broadcast warned you.

But the moves are already happening.

Foreign creditors pulling back from U.S. debt. Central banks buying gold at the fastest pace in modern history. New payment rails being built to route around the dollar entirely.

This isn't a crash you recover from in 18 months. It's a suffocation. Costs rise. Assets reprice. The retirement math millions depend on quietly stops working — permanently.

I've spent 31 years inside institutional finance watching monetary systems fracture.

What I'm seeing now is different in scale, in speed, and in how few people understand what it actually means.

I recorded a short briefing explaining exactly what's moving and where capital needs to go before this becomes obvious to everyone.

I give you my single highest-conviction gold play institutional money is flooding into right now.

In One Sip
Big banks like Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo pay `0.01%` on savings. On `$1,000`, that is `10` cents for the year.
The national average savings rate is `0.38%` and has not moved since April (FDIC).
The top online savings accounts pay around `4%`, with the same FDIC insurance. That is roughly `10` times the average.
The Fed has held rates at every meeting in 2026. The range sits at `3.50%` to `3.75%`. The next decision is July `29`.
A record `$7.95` trillion has already moved into money-market funds (ICI). The cash that pays attention left. The average account is still parked at `0.38%`.
Why It Matters for Your Money

Here is the math on your own money. Say you keep `$25,000` in savings, a normal cushion for a homeowner. At the big-bank rate of `0.01%`, that earns you `$2.50` a year. At `4%`, the same money, same FDIC insurance, earns about `$1,000`.

That is a `$997` swing for opening a different account.

Set it against your grocery run. Beef is up about `14%` over the past year. A `$997` raise covers a lot of that sting. And it is already yours. You are just letting the bank keep it.

Over five years, that gap tops `$5,000`. Your paycheck gets taxed and fought over. This money sits still. The only thing between you and it is a login and fifteen minutes. The Fed is not why your cash earns nothing. Your bank is.

The Wealth Angle

Now here is the part most people miss. That gap is not an accident. It is a business model.

The bank pays you `0.01%`. Then it lends the same dollar back out at `7%` on a car loan, over `20%` on a credit card. The spread is the profit. An account that pays nothing is not broken. It works exactly as designed, for them.

I think the Fed obsession is a quiet gift to the banks. Every headline asks whether the Fed holds or hikes on July `29`. The stock crowd is glued to the screen. The S&P `500` slid about `1%` on Friday and the VIX climbed to `18.77`. While everyone watches the market, the money on the table gets ignored.

A record `$7.95` trillion already voted with its feet. That is not a forecast. That is people who spent the fifteen minutes. The only question left is which pile your cash is in.

☕ Key Insight:
A savings account paying `0.01%` is not a safe default. It is a slow leak, quietly draining what you already earned. Moving idle cash to a top account near `4%` fixes it with no lock-up and no risk.
Coffee Break Move

This morning, log into your bank and find the rate on your savings. Not the balance. The rate. If it starts with `0.0`, you just found free money.

If you are comfortable: open a top-rated online savings account or buy a short-term Treasury paying around `4%`. Same FDIC or government backing. Move your emergency fund over and you have handed yourself a raise before lunch.

If you are stretched: this one is for you most of all. You do not need spare money to do it. You are moving cash you already have to an account that pays you. Nothing to buy. Nothing to risk.

Ray called Sunday. He moved the `$31,000`. The new account will pay him more this year than the old one paid in the last ten combined. Then he poured a cup and said the part I keep chewing on. The bank was never going to tell him. You have to check.
